Derek van der Plaat


Derek leads Canadian Technology, Media and Telecom M&A advisory services for Ernst & Young Orenda Corporate Finance. He has worked in the software, hardware, telecom, media, mobile, IT solutions, cleantech and fintech sectors and has extensive experience in cross-border transactions with both financial and strategic counterparties.

Derek has over 20 years’ experience in corporate finance and M&A, and has also guided technology start-ups and early stage SaaS and digital media companies in the roles of CEO, CFO and Board Member.

After 10 years in Investment Banking with CIBC World Markets, Derek founded and led one of the first companies to provide cloud hosted retail solutions in Canada in 2003. Puretracks was also the first company in Canada to legally sell music online in association with the recording industry and leading distribution partners such as TELUS, MSN and AOL. Puretracks secured growth capital from strategic investors such as Universal Music, Entertainment One and Standard Broadcasting and was sold to a national carrier in 2006.

Derek subsequently formed DVP Capital Management Inc., where he completed numerous financings and acquisitions in the mobile content, marketing and online game sectors as an operator, shareholder and board member.
Derek holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from McGill University, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Concordia University and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
